The fracture toughness of medical implants is an important property.
The resistance of a material to brittle fracture in the presence of a crack is measured by fracture toughness. Despite the presence of a crack, high fracture toughness materials do not fracture easily. Brittle fracture (sudden failure) is common in low fracture toughness materials.
When a material with a pre-existing crack is subjected to tension, stresses are no longer distributed evenly, and stress concentration at the crack tip increases, resulting in microcrack initiation and propagation. This causes a fracture.
When toughness is a concern, Ti-6Al-4V ELI (Titanium Gr.23) should be considered because it is tougher than standard grade Ti-6Al-4V.
