ASTM B265 and ASTM F67 are Titanium standards that suggest the quality parameters for commercially pure Titanium raw materials.
The primary distinction between these two standards is that “an alpha case layer on a titanium surface, are not permitted under ASTM F67, while the same is allowed under ASTM B265 standard.”
Alpha case in microstructure determines the longevity of Titanium end-products.
The ASTM B265 only addresses mechanical and chemical requirements. There is no requirement for a microstructure/alpha case in the ASTM B265 standard.
So it is better to use ASTM F67 standard commercially pure Titanium material for medical implant applications.
At the end of the standards series, we will explain the Alpha case and its effects on Titanium end-products.
