In many biomedical applications, titanium is an excellent choice because titanium and titanium alloys exhibit high specific strength. The low electrical conductivity of Ti and Ti alloys contributes to electrochemical oxidation leading to the creation of a thin passive oxide layer. It is used for the construction of modular implants because it has a low level of corrosion that saves inventory and allows for a more precise implant fit.

Ti-6Al-4V ELI grade exhibits a unique combination of physical, mechanical and corrosion resistance properties that have led to a positive result for orthopaedic industries. The properties of any alloy determine whether a material is ideal for biomedical implant application that includes biofunctionality, biocompatibility, bioadhesion, and corrosion resistance. Global agencies such as U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the International Standards Organisation (ISO) have already given a green signal for its application as orthopaedic implants.
