Titanium For Medical Application(Biocompatibility)
Biocompatibility is the most sought property for any materials identified for biomaterials. The focus of the present article is to highlight the biocompatibility of Titanium and Titanium alloys.
In many biomedical applications, titanium is an excellent choice because titanium and titanium alloys exhibit high specific strength. The low electrical conductivity of Ti and Ti alloys contributes to electrochemical oxidation leading to the creation of a thin passive oxide layer. The passive oxide remains protective at wider pH values of the human body. In aqueous environments, Ti and its oxides have low reactivity and low ion-formation tendency with macromolecules.
Among different titanium alloys available, the Ti-6Al-4V alloy exhibit excellent properties for use in porous forms for biological fixation of prostheses. Ti-6Al-4V ELI is the advanced version of this alloy with lower interstitial elements and better properties. Its modulus of elasticity is closer to that of bone which allows its use in numerous porous implants. It is used for the construction of modular implants because it has a low level of corrosion that saves inventory and allows for a more precise implant fit.
Ti-6Al-4V ELI grade exhibits a unique combination of physical, mechanical and corrosion resistance properties that have led to a positive result for orthopaedic industries. The properties of any alloy determine whether a material is ideal for biomedical implant application that includes biofunctionality, biocompatibility, bioadhesion, and corrosion resistance. Global agencies such as U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the International Standards Organisation (ISO) have already given a green signal for its application as orthopaedic implants.
Titanium For Medical Application like artificial hearts, dental implants, orthopaedic implants, artificial knee joints, pacemakers, cardiac valve prostheses, artificial hip joints, screws for fracture fixation and cornea backplates.
Widespread research suggests that Ti-6Al-4V ELI exhibits good hemocompatibility, cytocompatibility, non-irritant, and non-sensitizing properties.
This shows Titanium is the best option concerning biocompatibility.
